Staying safe on RentSelect
We screen listings, but no marketplace catches everything. A little skepticism goes a long way.
Scam warning signs
- The landlord refuses to show the property in person or via video tour
- You're asked to wire money or pay in gift cards / crypto before viewing
- The rent is dramatically below market for the area
- Photos look like they were lifted from another listing site
- The contact email or phone changes between messages
- You're asked to fill out a credit application before any back-and-forth
Viewing safely
- View in person before signing — never sign sight-unseen
- Bring a friend or family member to viewings
- Verify the listing matches the property in person (unit number, address, amenities)
- Confirm the landlord's identity matches title records (in BC, ON, AB you can search title online)
- Get a written lease before paying first month + deposit
- Pay deposit by e-transfer or certified cheque — never cash
